Elyria-Dewhurst Center

The Dewhurst location in Elyria, one of six in Lorain County, earned the highest quality Gold Rating from the State of Ohio's "Step Up to Quality Program and offers year-round programming for students 18 months to 14 years of age and a safe, supportive environment for children. It also offers free preschool scholarships and transportation for school-aged children to and from local schools.

Program Highlights

We develop language and literacy, as well as social, emotional and physical skills. Our staff members guide their students with various teaching methods that are based on recommendations from the state of Ohio, including:

Horizon Education Centers focuses on kindergarten readiness and school-age enrichment, and we're a proud partner of the Ohio Healthy Programs, which ensures your children have healthy food options daily.

Each of our centers has a toddler playground area, preschool playground area and school-age playground area.

I have been married for 20 yrs to my best friend and have 2 handsome young men as my sons. I have worked at Dewhurst for 15yrs. The relationships I have built with the families and children is most important to me. I try to be someone they can trust and come to if they need anything. Making a positive difference in someone's life makes me smile and that's why I love my job.

Center Director

I love working with children and being part of their learning and growth. I believe that children learn best when they feel happy, safe, respected, and excited to come to school — and I believe the same is true for the adults who teach and care for them! To me, success comes when you truly enjoy what you are doing, feel valued, and know that your work makes a difference.

I have a Master’s degree in Translation and English Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Philology from Khmelnytskyi National University (Ukraine). Over the years, I have had the opportunity to be a teacher, childcare administrator, program coordinator, and founder of an early childhood education program. Each of these experiences has strengthened my love for education and taught me how important a strong, caring team is to a successful center.

As a Center Director, I want our center to be a place filled with kindness, creativity, respect, laughter, and learning. I love supporting teachers, sharing ideas, finding creative solutions, and creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable bringing their own talents and personality to the classroom.
I speak English, Ukrainian, and Russian, and outside of work I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family. Most of all, I love learning new things and sharing that excitement with others!

ABOUT: I have been in child care for a little over 11 years. I work with the toddler and I love every second of it. I love to teach and watch them grow.

EDUCATION: I graduated high school in 2010 and received my CDA in 2023

Mindy Savina

Preschool Lead Teacher

ABOUT: My name is Mindy Savina. I am the Lead Head Start teacher. I have been teaching for about 30 years but this is my 6th year at Horizon. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in children’s literature from the University of Toledo in 1995. I was born and raised in Elida Ohio(Lima) but I currently reside in Brunswick with my husband. I have 3 children and a grand baby.

Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher. It brought me joy to see inquiring minds learn , grow and develop into confident young individuals. It was the best decision I have ever made. It warms my heart to see their faces light up as they discover something new. I am grateful for the opportunity to shape the minds of the next generation. “You must find the place inside yourself where nothing is impossible”- Deepak Chopra
