Elyria-Dewhurst Center

The Dewhurst location in Elyria, one of six in Lorain County, earned the highest quality Gold Rating from the State of Ohio's "Step Up to Quality Program and offers year-round programming for students 18 months to 14 years of age and a safe, supportive environment for children. It also offers free preschool scholarships and transportation for school-aged children to and from local schools.

Program Highlights

We develop language and literacy, as well as social, emotional and physical skills. Our staff members guide their students with various teaching methods that are based on recommendations from the state of Ohio, including:

Horizon Education Centers focuses on kindergarten readiness and school-age enrichment, and we're a proud partner of the Ohio Healthy Programs, which ensures your children have healthy food options daily.

Each of our centers has a toddler playground area, preschool playground area and school-age playground area.

Nikki Perez

Center Director

EDUCATION Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Lorain Community College. She is currently completing her Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Leadership.

ABOUT Nikki has been working in the education field since 2004. She has worked with various age groups throughout her career. Her passion is being a support for her families and children in her community. Her favorite quote is, "If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be." - Maya Angelou. Nikki is also the site coordinator for Southside Pride.

Kristen Hall

Business Coordinator

EDUCATION Associate Degree in Liberal Studies from Lorain County Community College.

ABOUT Prior to joining the Horizon team, Ms. Hall worked in retail management for 10 years. Ms. Hall has been with Horizon for almost a year, starting out as a Site Coordinator and just recently became the Business Coordinator. She loves working on the school administration side.

I have been married for 20 yrs to my best friend and have 2 handsome young men as my sons. I have worked at Dewhurst for 15yrs. The relationships I have built with the families and children is most important to me. I try to be someone they can trust and come to if they need anything. Making a positive difference in someone's life makes me smile and that's why I love my job.

Brook Glass

Lead Gym Teacher

EDUCATION: Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Lorain County Community College

ABOUT: Ms. Brook has always had a loved for children. She babysat when she was younger and enjoyed taking care of children. She has also taken extra classes to earn her Afterschool Program Certificate.

ABOUT: I have been in child care for a little over 11 years. I work with the toddler and I love every second of it. I love to teach and watch them grow.

Mindy Savina

Preschool Lead Teacher

ABOUT: My name is Mindy Savina. I am the Lead Head Start teacher. I have been teaching for about 30 years but this is my 6th year at Horizon. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in children’s literature from the University of Toledo in 1995. I was born and raised in Elida Ohio(Lima) but I currently reside in Brunswick with my husband. I have 3 children and a grand baby.

Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher. It brought me joy to see inquiring minds learn , grow and develop into confident young individuals. It was the best decision I have ever made. It warms my heart to see their faces light up as they discover something new.
