There’s no shortage of benefits tied to afterschool programs. While children can access support to improve their academic performance, they also enrich their development with STEM and art activities. Rather than engaging in risky behaviors, students can focus time on constructive activities, and build their social and emotional skills in the process.

Unfortunately, as the demand for afterschool programs surges, millions of children are unable to access this resource. One of the biggest barriers to accessing afterschool programs has been cost, with 57% of parents citing expenses as a barrier for participation. Meanwhile, 53% of parents cited a lack of transportation to and from afterschool programs as another reason for inaccessibility.

Lights On Afterschool acknowledges these barriers and strives to make a difference.

An Introduction to Lights on Afterschool

Lights On Afterschool is a project organized by the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of quality afterschool programs and making them affordable. Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is a nationwide event where participating afterschool programs, schools, communities, and advocates come together to showcase the powerful impact of afterschool programs.

Today, more than 8,000 Lights On Afterschool rallies are held each year. Alongside these events, other events include open houses for afterschool programs and special opportunities for students to share how afterschool programs have shaped their lives.

How Horizon Celebrated This Year

As a provider of affordable, quality afterschool programs, we greatly support and appreciate the Lights On Afterschool mission. And we wanted to celebrate that this year.

Joined by Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley, the Horizon team decorated the historic Lorain Harbor Lighthouse with posters showcasing students’ artwork. The posters were displayed at the top of the lighthouse, and spoke to why Horizon’s programs were important to them. As part of the event, we also hosted a live stream where Horizon parents could leave comments and have the lighthouse changed to their child’s favorite color.
