Boosting Your Child's Immune System

horizon toddlerWhen cold weather strikes, it seems like kids and colds go hand in hand. Between their developing systems and their tendency to put any and all objects in their mouths, these young bodies provide a breeding ground for any germ that comes along.

There is a silver lining to this cloud. Each sniffle and cough means your child’s resistance to germs is getting a little bit stronger. You can also help toughen up their fledgling immune system by incorporating these tips into your family’s routine.

  • A healthy diet is the number one way to maintain good health. Fruits and vegetables are nature’s defense against illness. They’re chock-full of phytonutrients that increase production of infection-fighting white cells. As a bonus, these same phytonutrients will protect your child against chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes as they grow into adulthood.
  • This one may be a bit tougher, but make sure your child gets plenty of sleep. Kids often resist naps and early bedtimes, but these rest periods give their systems time to recharge. When children are overtired, their immune systems get tired as well and illness-fighting resources are reduced.
  • Exercise is not only good for the immune system, it provides a number of benefits for overall health. Encouraging your child to develop a habit of regular physical activity now will pay dividends for a lifetime. Make it even more appealing by getting the whole family involved. Bike riding, hiking and skating are just a few of the outings you can all enjoy together.
  • Your child's health is a primary concern to us as well. Our Toddler Care program provides activities to promote their physical, cognitive and social development. Caring, qualified staff members are on hand to give them individual attention as well.
