2026 Memorial Day Events Near Cleveland for Families

Since 1868, with the end of the Civil War still fresh in their minds, Americans have dedicated a day to honoring the men and women who died serving in the military. Held annually on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is both a solemn occasion and a day when patriotic parades, complete with marching bands and waving flags, serve as family-friendly events in Cleveland. Picnics often follow the parades, ushering in the unofficial first day of summer with grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, a cornucopia of salads, and tall cool glasses of homemade lemonade.

Here are some activities the whole family can love while celebrating the start of summer and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for American ideals.

Horizon Launches Parent Appreciation Pancake Breakfast

Horizon is proud to support both our children and families in meaningful ways every day. For our youngest learners, children ages 18 months to 5 years, we provide breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack to ensure they are nourished and ready to learn. Our school-age children (ages 6–14) receive breakfast before school and a healthy afternoon snack when they return to the center, keeping them energized throughout the day.

In addition to our children, Horizon values the families who make our community so special. That’s why we were excited to launch our Parent Appreciation Pancake Breakfast, a heartfelt way to recognize and celebrate our parents. The first breakfast, held Monday, April 13, brought families together at all 14 Horizon centers for a warm, welcoming morning filled with connection and gratitude.

Horizon and Girl Scouts Team Up for Cookie Success and Skill Building

This past month, Horizon Education Centers proudly partnered with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio to bring Girl Scout troops into 13 Horizon locations, creating a meaningful opportunity for girls to learn, grow, and lead right where they learn every day. As part of Horizon’s Afterschool Club Programs, a dedicated teacher at each participating center completed Girl Scout training and became a troop leader, guiding the girls through hands-on experiences focused on confidence, teamwork, and real-world skill development.

At Horizon’s Parma Community Center, our Preschool program follows the Creative Curriculum, which encourages hands-on learning and real-world exploration. One recent study focused on conducting interviews, and our preschoolers took it to heart!

Led by Ms. Megan, the class decided to interview someone very special: Executive Director of Horizon Education Centers Dave Smith. Ms. Megan introduced Mr. Dave with a photo and explained that he’s the person who helps make sure our schools run smoothly — and why we all get to come to school each day!
